What to Expect when I’m Expecting You

What to Expect when I’m Expecting You

The diary of a newborn and baby photographer is a complicated place! Nobody told your baby that they are expected to turn up for their portrait session and while some can’t wait to get here, some are fashionably late. This makes my diary a wonderfully fluid place!
When you first book your session you will be required to pay the £65 deposit to reserve your place in my diary. I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so that I can ensure I can fit everybody in and work around midwife and health visitor appointments once baby is here.
Once your baby arrives and you have settled back in at home just message me and we can then confirm the best date and time for your session.
Your portrait session will take place in my comfortable purpose designed studio. Newborn studios are not like traditional photography studios – they are designed to be warm and comfortable. I want you and your baby to feel relaxed and comfortable so you are able to feed on demand and put your feet up with refreshments and a magazine (I even have some new dads who take a quick nap!)

So that I can capture your baby perfectly while they are still so brand new, for most of the session your baby will be in their birthday suit. Newborn clothes never fit correctly so we don’t get to see all those beautiful details that say ‘hey I’m brand new!’

However, one of the downsides of this, is your baby is guaranteed to poop and/or pee on props, blankets, perhaps even me or you! This is just par for the course, something I’m used to dealing with on a daily basis and something I allow for. All of my blankets and props are washed after each session and I have plenty of cloths
and towels to hand. You might want to pop a change of clothes for yourself into your changing bag, just incase the worse happens.

Your newborn portrait session can take up to 3 hours and the reason for this is your newborn will need feeding, cuddles and cleaning throughout the session which is baby led rather than photographer led!
I hope this article answers the many common questions but if you would like to book or discuss a session please contact me on – 01257 264346    kathhancock@yahoo.co.uk

Should I have a Maternity Shoot?

Should I have a Maternity Shoot?

I have had the privilege of being pregnant twice, I loved the idea of being pregnant and how special it was to be carrying a brand new life inside me but in reality I felt tired, big, heavy and the last thing on my mind was a ‘Bump’ photo session.

But remember, you might not feel your best, but from the outside, we see a beautiful woman bringing a new life (or two or more!) into the world, with a gorgeous little baby growing inside of you. Pregnancy is a thing of beauty, awe and amazement for many people – and it will be for you too if you ignore the cheeky gremlins in your mind telling you otherwise. Gosh, some women will surely feel envious and jealous of you too, remembering what a special time pregnancy was and/or wishing they were in your shoes! You will only be pregnant a few times (if that) in your entire life. No matter if you think you look far from glowing or glamourous, a skilled pregnancy photographer can easily draw out the beauty, love and femininity of your pregnancy.

Some Wonderful things about having a Maternity Session –

Making memories – You might be unsure about it now, but if you don’t have a photography session while you’re pregnant, you’ve lost the chance to create once in a lifetime memories – you can’t get them back. Photos also trigger memories, feelings, emotions… they help you remember more vividly. Even if you don’t care for the memory for yourself, I can assure you that when your children are older, they will be delighted to see the photos of their pregnant mamma, while they were growing inside of you.

Bonding – It can be harder for a dad-to-be to bond with an unborn baby, since the baby is growing inside of you, moving inside you, having hiccups inside of you – and not him. You might feel all warm and fuzzy when those things happen, but he can’t feel it so he doesn’t know how wonderful it is. But putting dad in the picture (pardon the pun!) can help him bond with baby a bit more too, and it gives him some special memories of his own – aside from you yelling at him for bringing you a cheese and tomato sandwich when you asked for a cheese, anchovy and pickle sandwich! It’s also a lovely way for siblings to spend some quality time with you and help prepare them for their new brother or sister.

Its Fun– Many pregnant women I speak to tell me that they had lots of fun and laughs during their photo shoot. If you choose a photographer that suits your personality and style you want from the shoot, you’ll have a great time. Make sure you do your homework though, and that the photographer is experienced in maternity photos – a normal photographer may not have the same creative ideas and poses suitable for a pregnant woman.

My Maternity sessions take place in my cosy home studio in Chorley, Lancashire.  I advise mum to be to come around 32-37 weeks pregnant. I have a lovely gown which you can use (pictures above) so its best to wear white underwear. you can also have some photographs in your own clothes and any ideas you have are great. Its also nice to bring your scan picture and/or some little booties. You can come with your partner or come alone and surprise him with the pictures later.

I can also provide a Bump to Baby package, so let me know if you want more info.

TIPS FOR PARENTS ON HOW BEST TO PHOTOGRAPH THEIR NEWBORN BABIES

TIPS FOR PARENTS ON HOW BEST TO PHOTOGRAPH THEIR NEWBORN BABIES

  1. The best time to photograph your Newborn is around 6-12 days old because at this age they are still sleepy and curl up more easily into adorable poses, and of course you want to capture their little feet, lips and wrinkles.
  2. As you all know I am sure, a full tummy of dreamy milk works a treat to get them to sleep.
  3.  Although it seems like such an obvious thing, so many people don’t consider room temperature, keeping the room warm and cosy is a must.
  4.  It also helps to have some background white noise which tends to sooth babies too sleep, making it easier to get the photographs you want. I use a free App. Called Baby Sleep.
  5. Natural light is always a great way to light your pictures so placing baby near a window is an easy and effective trick. If you place babies head closest to the light it also enhances all the little details, helping you capture their tiny toes, rosebud mouths and sleepy eyes.
  6. Also try different angles with your camera.

Most of all enjoy what an amazing experience it is to hold your baby and be able to capture their first precious moments of your sweet little one.

Please remember, babies safety comes first, never leave them on or in something eg, basket even for one moment.

If you decide you would like a Professional Photographer to capture your baby’s newness, look for someone who specialises in Newborn Baby Photography and has had training in this area.
